Seminar Title: Synthesis and Characterization of Electroluminescent Materials for Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) Applications
Abstract: Synthesis of a variety of luminescent materials will be described. In the first part of the talk, polymers with side-chain emissive metal complexes will be discussed. Additional photoactive groups such as hole-transport compounds are incorporated into the polymers along with the metal complexes in order to enhance the charge mobility, provide energy transfer into the metal complexes and to increase the solubility of the polymers. Three different types of metal complexes are used: Green-emitting fluorescent aluminum tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq3), near IR-emitting ytterbium tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Ybq3), and phosphorescent iridium- and platinum-based complexes with emission spectra that span the whole visible spectrum. Optimization of OLED performance by optimizing the polymer structure will also be discussed. In the second part of the talk, anthracene-based molecules and their photophysical properties will be reviewed. In the final part, subject will be changed to industrial polymers; airbag coatings and polyurethanes for various applications will be briefly discussed.
