Sizing of Renewable Energy Systems for Micro-Grids

Assist. Prof. Onur Taylan
Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus Campus

Date: Wednesday, May 10th
Time:  1:40pm - 2:30pm
Location:  FENS, L035
Tittle: Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus Campus
Today we face the formidable challenge of meeting the fuel need of a growing population while minimizing the adverse impacts on our environment. Thus, we search for sustainable technologies that can provide us with renewable energy solutions and fuels while mitigating the emission of global pollutants. However, renewable energy sources have a major drawback; they are variable. This talk covers some sustainable solutions to this problem of the renewable energy sources. The solution methodology includes resource assessment, system level modeling of system components, component sizing, diversify the sources, performance assessment and economic analysis. This seminar includes some instructive studies undertaken at Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus, real-life examples as well as future direction in related aspects.

Short Bio

Dr. Onur Taylan is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Program at Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus since September 2014, and a researcher at Center for Solar Energy Research and Applications (GUNAM) in Middle East Technical University. He received his doctoral degree from The University of Texas at Austin, USA in 2014, and he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Middle East Technical University in 2007 and 2010, respectively in Mechanical Engineering. He served as the Administrative Assistant and Online Administrative in the International Journal of Thermodynamics from 2008 to 2014. In his research, he has been working on the system level modeling of renewable energy systems, mainly photovoltaic, solar thermal and energy storage systems. He is also working on designing and modeling non-thermal plasma reactors for solar fuel production. He was a recipient of NSF-ASME Heat Transfer Division Award, and two Professional Development Awards by The University of Texas at Austin.
