Title: High Temperature Creep and Superplasticity in Oxide Ceramics

Abstract: Based on enhancing energy efficiency, it has been recognized that ceramics need to be considered for structural applications at high temperatures. In view of this potential, there has been considerable interest over the past couple of decades to develop and understand the high temperature creep and superplastic characteristics of ceramics. The fundamental aspects of creep and superplasticity in oxide ceramics such as alumina and zirconia will be described with reference to current understanding of these well known phenomena in metals. Experiments have been conducted at temperatures up to ~1800 K in tension, compression and bending, on ceramics with a range of grain sizes from ~60 nm to ~10 μm. Key issues related to processing and microstructural effects on deformation and failure will be discussed, and further critical areas for research will be highlighted. Specifically, the role of diffusion measurements will be explored in oxide ceramics such as zirconia and alumina.
