Abstract: As the latest micro- and nano-processing microscopy technology, Focused Ion Beam (FIB) instruments use ion and electron beams for a wide spectrum of nanosurgery applications of materials, such as: site-specific analysis, imaging, milling, deposition, micromachining, prototyping, surface modification and micro-manipulation. For this purpose, dual-beam platforms (FIB-SEM) are usually equipped with precursor-based gas injection systems (GIS), micromanipulators, and chemical analysis tools (such as, EDS or WDS systems). Specimen preparation of very thin sections with ultrahigh precision can be conducted by dual-beam systems, which are to be investigated in transmission electron microscopes (TEM). Besides, slicing and sampling processes, in combination to SEM high resolution imaging and EDS mapping, are frequently used for revealing the structural and morphological distribution of material systems with three-dimensional (3D) network at micro- /nanoscale. Especially, when hard materials or material systems with hard substrates are taken into account, FIB technologies serve many practical and rapid methodologies for site-specific processing/analysis and regional micro- and nanomachining. In this seminar, advanced FIB-SEM nanostructuring, patterning and characterization based research of Dr. Sezen will be presented for determining morphological, chemical and structural features of a variety of materials and systems, ranging from ultra-hard materials to very soft tissues; including metallic alloys, semiconductor devices, human tooth and neural tissues.

Bio: Assoc Prof. Dr. Meltem Sezen got her BSc and MSc degrees in Materials Science and Engineering. In 2009, she has received her PhD at Graz University of Technology, Austria in Physics Engineering. She then conducted her postdoctoral research at Graz Center of Electron Microscopy of Austria. Since 2011 Dr. Sezen has been employed at Sabanci University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) as a senior researcher. Her research fields include: advanced Electron Microscopy; Focused Ion Beam based nanostructuring and nanomodification; organic optoelectronic devices; biomaterials and functionalization of surfaces. She so far published 1 book chapter, 45 articles, +70 conference proceedings and has participated in 15 academic projects.
