Abstract:The presentation focuses on the main ideas, concepts, and principles of vibration based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) from a user perspective. The emphasis is on Data-Based (Machine Learning) type methods and Robustness to varying Operating Conditions (OCs) and Uncertainty; with the latter constituting a widely acknowledged technology barrier. The prime families of robust methods and algorithms are schematized, with their performance being exemplified via a benchmark study pertaining to damage detection for a population of composite aerostructure coupons. Further advances on the feasibility of damage precise localization are also presented. Two application case studies are demonstrated, with the achievable performance reliably recorded on Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves indicating the Probability of Detection versus Probability of False Alarm. The presentation concludes with a summary of the main points and an outlook.
