Abstract: 3D Printing (3DP) is an approach to process parts directly from its computer-aided design (CAD) file. 3DP is changing the landscapes of current industrial practices. On-demand manufacturing using 3DP technologies is a new trend that will significantly influence many industries and product design protocols. Since there is no need for any part-specific tooling, different parts can be built using the same machine. Most of these parts are net-shape or near-net-shape that may or may not require any finishing operation. We have worked on 3DP of hard materials, primarily metals and ceramics, over the last two decades. We have used fused deposition modeling, laser engineered net shaping, and powder bed-based 3D printing processes. We have manufactured parts with compositional, functional, and structural gradation mostly for structural and biomedical applications using these AM approaches. My presentation will focus on some of the key success stories from our research and current challenges in the field.

Bio: Amit Bandyopadhyay is a Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and an Affiliate Professor of the College of Medicine at Washington State University (WSU). He has worked/working with 20 Ph.D. and 30 MS graduate students, and over 50 undergraduate students at WSU. He has written over 340 technical articles, edited 11 books, inventor of 20 issued patents, and a member of several journals' editorial boards, including the Journal of Materials Research, Additive Manufacturing, Applied Surface Science, Advances in Materials Science and Engineering, and Applied Ceramic Technology. His research expertise focuses on additive manufacturing / 3D Printing, emphasizing bone implants, and multi-materials structures. He received the CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research, and the Anjan Bose Researcher award from the WSU. He is a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), American Ceramic Society, American Society for Materials (ASM), American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and an elected member at the Washington State Academy of Science (WSAS). His work has been cited over 22,500 times, and the current "h" index is 80 (Google Scholar). Prof. Bandyopadhyay received research funding from various federal and state agencies, foundations, and companies over $22.0 million as a PI or Co-PI.
