Title: Evaluation of quasicrystal-reinforced aluminum alloy: Implications for use in additive manufacturing (MAT, ME, IE, MFG)

Abstract: Quasicrystal-reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites exhibit combinations of properties that are attractive for metal additive manufacturing. However, it is challenging to evaluate such systems due to difficulties in modeling the solidification and microstructural evolution. In this talk, I will introduce an emerging strategy to evaluate novel metal matrix composites for use in additive manufacturing. Laser glazing in a powder bed fusion instrument was used as an efficient method to evaluate an Al85Cu6Fe3Cr6 alloy, and the resulting microstructures were characterized using electron microscopy. Since the quasicrystal reinforcement phase is inherently metastable, it is important to understand the thermal decomposition (crystallization) of this phase, and in situ heating studies can provide unique insights. I will present findings on the thermal stability of these laser-processed microstructures, analyzed through in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy heating experiments. Additionally, the understanding the complex atomic arrangements in the structure of quasicrystals is challenging, we employ comprehensive methodology to analyze statistically generated ground states of orthorhombic approximants using density functional theory to shed light on the role of elemental variations of such complex alloys.

Bio: Baris Yavas is a Research Scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Connecticut (UConn). His research interests include advanced characterization techniques, microstructural development, novel alloy development for additive manufacturing, failure analysis, and materials for extreme environments. Dr. Yavas earned his Ph.D. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, where he received the award for the most successful doctoral thesis. His scholarly contributions include over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles and 30 conference presentations, with a notable role in academic service as a guest associate editor and as vice chair of ASM International’s Connecticut Chapter. Dr. Yavas joined UConn as a post-doctoral researcher in August 2020, collaborating with the groups of Pamir Alpay and Mark Aindow on a project exploring Al-Cu-Fe-based quasicrystal-reinforced aluminum matrix MMCs for additive manufacturing applications. Currently, he is responsible for three major research projects funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Pratt & Whitney, and Collins Aerospace.
